Overdrive Pride & Polish: The heat is on

Jeff Botelho’s Peterbilt 379 tied with the Brinkers’ Freightliner Classic XL for Best
of Show Working Bobtail.

Las Vegas’ 100-degree-plus days have nothing on the hot winning streak of Brad Caton and Bob and Shelley Brinker, who extended their victories at Overdrive’s Pride & Polish during the Great West Truck Show June 28. They were joined by Jeff Botelho, Ryan Danylchuk and Bill Sandvik as Best of Show champs from the field of 40 entrants.

For Best of Show Working Bobtail, Botelho’s flamed 2007 Peterbilt 379 tied with the Brinkers’ well-known Legend of the Black Pearl, a tribute to Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” film trilogy and the Brinkers’ late daughter, Amie Knight. Caton, showing Eilen & Sons Trucking’s 2001 Peterbilt 379 and dump trailer, won Best of Show Working Combo.

The Brinkers and Caton also won Best of Show awards this year at two other Pride & Polish events: the 75 Chrome Shop contest in Wildwood, Fla., and the Paul K. Young Memorial Truck Beauty Championship in Louisville, Ky.

Caton’s Peterbilt has been getting three or four awards per show since he began competing with it last year, and grabbed five awards at Vegas, he says. The consistent wins are due to “the way we clean and detail stuff.”

For the Brinkers’ Legend, the five awards at Vegas bring their total to more than 70 for their 2000 Freightliner Classic XL under its current design. The truck also won dozens of awards with its former fantasy theme, Dragon On.

He and Shelley plan to keep the movie theme, and they’re probably not through developing it, Brinker says “We save up during the summer and do our little thing in the winter to surprise everybody for the next year,” he says.
