More than 95 percent of drivers and 80 percent of the vehicles inspected passed compliance tests in the 2010 Roadcheck, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance said of its June 8-10 roadside inspections.
Brake-related defects accounted for half of the out-of-service violations recorded in the compliance tests. Lights violations and tires and wheels violations each comprised roughly one-tenth.
Nearly 77 percent of the 48,970 vehicles tested for the most comprehensive of the roadside checks, referred to as the North American Standard Level 1 inspections, passed. Tests were conducted on 65,327 trucks and buses total in Canada, the United States and Mexico.
Hours-of-service violations made up more than half of the out-of-service driver violations.
The number of total inspections decreased 10 percent from last year’s check. Vehicle compliance rates dropped slightly from 80.4 percent to 80. The driver compliance rate remained the same from 2009 to 2010, and NAS Level 1 inspection compliance rates decreased from 77.8 percent to 76.7 percent for vehicles and increased from 96.3 percent to 96.1 percent for drivers.
