Diesel prices skyrocket

After five weeks of declines, the national average retail price of diesel surged 8 cents to $3.801 in the latest week, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration.

Average prices shot up in all regions, except New England, where the price dipped 0.5-cent. The West Coast, excluding California, jumped 10 cents to $4.01. California added 7.6 cents, pushing the average price above $4 a gallon to $4.053. The Lower Atlantic region rose 8.7 cents to $3.761, while the Midwest increased 8.3 cents to $3.754.

With the price increase, the national average price is 72.8 cents higher than a year ago. The record diesel price was $4.764 in July 2008.
