At a ceremony in August, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush dedicated a statewide implementation of the PrePass electronic clearance system. Operated by Lockheed Martin IMS, the system is a partnership between participating states and Heavy Vehicle Electronic License Plate, Inc. The strictly voluntary system allows qualified carriers to comply electronically with weight, safety and credential requirements. Enrolled trucks are weighed at highway speeds by weigh-in-motion scales while their credentials are checked electronically, saving drivers time at scale houses and ports-of-entry, HELP says.
The system is now operational at 12 locations in Florida, including I-95, north and southbound at Yulee and Flagler; I-75, north and southbound at White Springs, Punta Gorda and Wildwood; and I-4, east and westbound at Plant City.
According to HELP, PrePass now operates in 23 states and includes more than 186,000 trucks. The system is available in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Montana, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
