U.S. and Canadian officials have agreed to create a truck cargo pre-inspection pilot project on Canadian soil.

The two nations signed a Memorandum of Understanding March14 to allow U.S. customs officers a preclearance area in Canada to conduct primary inspection activities for eligible trucks and drivers seeking to enter the United States.

The first phase will test the concept of conducting primary cargo inspection in Canada and will be implemented at the Pacific Highway crossing between Surrey, British Columbia and Blaine, Wash. The second phase will further test how pre-inspection could be more efficient and will be implemented at the Peace Bridge crossing between Fort Erie, Ontario and Buffalo, N.Y.
