Operators have until Aug. 31 to order compliant Calif. reefer unit, state says

The California Air Resources Board advises ordering compliance technology for 2009 transport refrigeration units (TRUs) before September to meet the state’s in-use performance standards by Dec. 31.

Purchase orders made before the end of the month for new replacement TRUs and TRU generator sets will help avoid penalties that could result from manufacturer or installer delays. Verified diesel particulate filter retrofits should be ordered by Oct. 31 to meet the Dec. 31 compliance deadline.

CARB cautioned that is probably too late to order refrigerated trailers because of a manufacturing backlog.

Additionally, replacement engines are no longer an option because California requires replacement engines that are cleaner than the engine removed. Replacement engines that fits and function cleaner than MY 2009 engines are not available.

The units must be registered in ARB’s Equipment Registration system by Dec. 31 to qualify for an extension of their compliance deadline. Also, purchase orders must have been completed early enough to allow for large-order backlogs and scheduling issues with delivery, installations and holidays.

Finally, owners must be able to provide documentation that they exercised due diligence in trying to meet the Dec. 31 compliance deadline.
