Nearly half of all trucks inspected in recent surprise commercial vehicle inspection blitzes in Nebraska were placed out-of-service, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.
NSP conducted the surprise inspections in Sarpy County, Omaha and Lincoln, focusing on trucks that might not travel outside of cities or pass through weigh stations as part of their regular routes. A total of 261 inspections were conducted during the three inspection sprees, and 109 trucks, or 42 percent, were placed out-of-service for violations related to brakes, tires and more.
In Lincoln, NSP and the Lincoln Police Department found 336 violations in 100 inspections, placing 41 trucks out-of-service during the blitz on Tuesday, May 16. Five drivers were also ordered out-of-service for various license offenses. Officers issued $7,350 in fines, NSP says.
In Omaha, state police conducted the inspections along with the Omaha Police Department last Wednesday, May 17. Of the 67 trucks inspected, 30 were placed out-of-service for violations related to brakes, tires and more. Additionally, five drivers were placed out-of-service for driver’s license violations. A total of 198 violations were found during the day, and officers issued a total of $3,950 in fines, according to the NSP report.
Finally, on Thursday, May 18, NSP conducted 94 inspections in Sarpy County, Neb., finding 336 violations and placing 38 trucks and five drivers out-of-service. More than $6,200 in fines were issued during the day.
NSP says surprise inspections are planned in cities and towns across the state later this year.
