A passing trucker is being credited with saving members of a western Iowa family from a house fire last week.

KMEG-TV reports Martin Hughes was driving through Sioux City, Iowa, on Oct. 18 when he saw a woman and two of her children on the side of the road flagging him down. Hughes, who is from Nebraska, stopped and was told there were two other children inside a burning home.

He reportedly tried to enter the home, but the smoke was too thick. He and the woman then went window to window and eventually found the children. They broke a window and lifted the children to safety.

Hughes was cut by the broken glass, but not seriously injured.
