Our “Ripley’s Believe It or Not!” calendar belatedly alerted us to the case of Seo Sang-moon, a South Korean who in 2005 passed the oral part of his driving test — on his 272nd attempt. Presumably Seo has passed the behind-the-wheel part of the driving test since then, as his ability to drive never was in dispute. Rather, he says, his illiteracy prevented him from reading a drivers’ manual and studying for the exam. Wouldn’t illiteracy hamper him in reading street signs, though?
