Truckers lobbied to support National Pork Rind Day

Rudolph RindsThis wouldn’t be the salty snack’s first appearance on the Channel 19 blog. For that, we’d have to go back to August 2010, when a driver choked on one and his rig left the roadway — and didn’t spur mainstream media calls for a ban on eating behind the wheel.

All the same, Ohio-based Rudolph Foods, makers of the pork rinds pictured here, spent all day Sept. 14 giving out bags of its barbecue, spicy and traditional rinds to drivers at the TA in Wapakoneta, Ohio, and several other locations to show their appreciation of the trucking world’s front-liners. That’s you.

“We realize without truckers delivering our products they would not get into the hands [and, er, bellies] of consumers,” Rudolph marketing manager Amanda Helmstetter told Lima (Ohio) News reporter Bart Mills in this story.

Mills details Rudolph’s “ulterior motive” in the appreciation effort, though, in ongoing efforts by the company to have Super Bowl Sunday named “National Pork Rind Day.”

Driver Bill McDonnell told Mills he’d get behind the idea: “I think they’ll find any trucker will support them if they give him something free to eat.”

No mention was made of the growing health-consciousness among drivers.
