With 2024 coming to a close, Overdrive is taking a look back at the dozens of Custom Rigs features that have been published in our pages this year and highlighting your most-read stories of the year.
Of the 10 most-read features, nine of them showcased video captured at various truck shows attended by Overdrive editors throughout the year. We'll count them down, starting with 10 here. Check back in Monday for the top five.
10. 'Casablanca': Owner-op's '05 379 with one of the last Double Eagles
Michigan-based owner-operator Tony Huttenstine showed his 2005 Peterbilt 379, "Casablanca," at the Mid-America Trucking Show back in March of this year. It boasts one of the last Double Eagle sleepers to roll off the assembly line before the company closed its doors. In addition to the impressive sleeper, the truck also features numerous custom touches.
9. Third-gen owner-operator Rafael Gonzales' 1984 Peterbilt 359, 'Goldie'
Rafael Gonzales, out of Uvalde, Texas, won top Pride & Polish honors in the Antique category with the 1984 Peterbilt 359, "Goldie," that his father bought in the late 1990s. Rafael drives it today as part of the family business's operation.
8. 2023 Pete 389 dubbed 'Fowl Attitude' by 'Rowdy Rooster' Jarad Mullinix
From the Large Cars & Guitars truck show in Tennessee in May, the "Fowl Attitude" 2023 Peterbilt 389 of Jarad Mullinix and West Lawrence Logistics. The rig features a unique paint color with flake to make it shine in the sun, custom striping and much more.
7. MATS 'Build-Off' winner: Immaculate '24 Peterbilt 389 built with old-school style
One of three trucks that was built specifically for the MATS Big Rig Build-Off this year is this 2024 Peterbilt 389 from Davis Bros. Designs. The immaculate "Lessons Learned" 389 was ultimately selected as the winner of that competition as part of the PKY Truck Beauty Championship. It's a blend of old-school and new-school stylings with a custom paint job, a music venue/bar-themed interior and much more.
6. 'I just had to have it': Missouri cattle hauler's '71 Pete 359
Satha Kilgore, owner of Missouri-based livestock-hauling fleet S&J Kilgore Trucking, still drives locally with the 1971 Peterbilt 359 featured early this year. Kilgore had the truck at the 2023 Guilty By Association Truck Show in Joplin, Missouri, last fall, but the story wasn't featured in Overdrive until January of this year. Kilgore bought the 359 EXHD in 2022 after the previous owner passed away. Kilgore had helped the man build the truck, and he was given the opportunity to buy it. "I just had to have it," he said.
