Used-truck sales see 'better than expected' gain in August

Same dealer used Class 8 retail truck sales experienced their first increase in five months in August, according to the latest State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks by ACT Research.

ACT reported an 11% increase over July, which ACT Research Vice President Steve Tam said “was better than expected on a seasonally adjusted basis. August is typically the second best sales month of the year, running more than 8% above average.”

Used-truck sales at auction also outperformed expectations, increasing 3.4% in August. Wholesale used-truck sales saw the largest month-over-month gain since February 2024, increasing by 35% from July, as also intimated in prior reporting in tandem with Overdrive sister Fusable company Price Digests' August update to the Class 8 conventional sleeper tractor price index for August.

“Even though summer does not officially end until late September, used truck sales typically exit the summer (and spring) doldrums in August,” Tam added. “Clearly August did not disappoint this year, at least from a unit volume perspective. Industry participants should interpret this as a positive sign, especially in light of all the noise in the economy and commercial vehicle market these days.”

New DAT One load board features look to improve carrier experience

DAT Freight & Analytics has made significant updates to its DAT One load board aimed to help carriers find loads quickly, negotiate rates with fresher market data, and feel confident they're connecting with freight brokers they can trust, the company announced this week.

A new “Prefer and Block” feature allows DAT One Pro subscribers to mark brokers as “preferred” or “blocked” to hone in their search results. DAT also updated the timeframes for historical rate information. Rate information now updates more frequently across all subscription levels:

  • DAT One Enhanced: 15-day rate averages (previously 30 days)
  • DAT One Pro: 7-day rate averages (previously 15 days)
  • DAT One Select & DAT One Office: Best-available averages (previously 15 days)

With fresher benchmarks, carriers might approach negotiations knowing they have the latest market averages, helping negotiate pricing with confidence, DAT noted.

A new LaneMakers feature, too, can identify the top 20 most active freight brokers posting loads on a given lane, complete with credit scores and company profiles, helping carriers find loads fast by targeting brokers who consistently post on preferred lanes.

And as previously reported, DAT One has added eight new equipment categories, including Sprinter-style cargo vans, power only and others.

“Carriers want to work faster, smarter, and with confidence that they’re connecting with quality partners,” said Christian Greiner, DAT Senior Director, Carrier Segment Growth. “These updates give carriers tools to spend less time searching, more time hauling, and greater leverage when they negotiate rates. They deliver real value for carriers and reinforce our commitment to drive trust in the marketplace.”

Wyoming, Colorado enforcement operation nets 4 arrests, dozens of OOS orders

A joint operation between the Wyoming Highway Patrol and Colorado State Patrol focusing on commercial carrier operations this week led to multiple arrests and two dozen trucks placed out of service, WHP reported.

On Sept. 30, WHP and CSP worked a commercial carrier traffic operation known as a Mobile Enforcement and Education Team (MEET) Detail on US 287 at the Wyoming/Colorado border south of Laramie.

The mobile enforcement teams inspected 82 commercial vehicles, ensuring the trucks were in compliance with federal safety regulations and the drivers were operating legally. These inspections led to a total of 16 drivers and 24 vehicles being put out of service, along with four arrests and one marijuana citation.

WHP troopers arrested three commercial vehicle drivers, all pertaining to repeat offenses. Two arrests were for repeated offenses of driving without a CDL license, and one arrest was for repeated violations of English language proficiency (ELP). Colorado State Patrol had one arrest related to a state-wide warrant.

WHP thanked the many truck drivers who do keep up with regulations for “working so hard to be safe on the road and keep our state and our nation moving.”
