New aid for sleep apnea?

Sleep researchers are testing a new approach to controlling sleep apnea. It involves an implant that would keep the tongue from relaxing so much that it blocks air passages.

Inspire Medical Systems plans to test 100 apnea patients by late January to see how well the implant really works. You can read a full report from the Associated Press on this technique, called hypoglossal nerve stimulation.

Truckers have a much higher incidence of obstructive sleep apnea. It would be great if this approach enables more drivers to get their condition under control and be more rested on the road.
