Prompted by a Jan. 20 order issued by President Trump, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will publish a notice Feb. 1 officially delaying the effective date of a new rule establishing national truck driver training standards.

A recently published FMCSA rule setting training requirements for entry-level truck drivers has been slightly delayed, in accordance with a recent order issued by President Trump.

California bill would add behind-the-wheel training minimum for new truckers

The bill would require 30 hours of driving for a Class A CDL. The bill would restore the requirements proposed by FMCSA last May but not adopted in the agency’s final driver training standards rule published in December. But they’d only apply to California-based applicants.

FMCSA establishes training standards, curriculum for new truck operators

New training standards for entry-level truck operators have been finalized by the U.S. Department of Transportation and will become requirements on February 7, 2020. In addition to a required core classroom curriculum, the rule establishes a registry of FMCSA-approved trainers.

FMCSA requires entry-level, CDL-seeking drivers to be taught a core curriculum and to receive behind-the-wheel training. The rule does not affect CDL holders who receive their CDL before the February 7, 2020, compliance date.
