CargoNet: Cargo thefts down in second quarter, values remain high
Cargo theft recording firm CargoNet received 150 cargo theft reports during the second quarter of 2019, a 14% decrease from the same period a year ago. The average loss value per cargo theft was $152,844 for an estimated total of $22.9 million during the quarter.

Agents followed the truck, which came to a stop on I-35 near milemarker 30. The driver then reportedly took off into the brush and escaped. Agents then inspected the truck and found 52 people inside the trailer.

CargoNet reports that in the first quarter of 2019, there was a total of 140 cargo thefts, a 22 percent decrease from 2018’s first quarter. The firm also notes that the average cargo value per theft during the quarter was $145,772 for a total estimated cost of $12.8 million.

On March 28, at approximately 12:20 p.m., Illinois trooper Brooke Jones-Story was conducting a commercial vehicle inspection on the side of U.S. Highway 20 and was standing outside her squad car when she was allegedly struck and killed by Dittmar’s truck.
