Trash, recycling pickup company requests reprieve from certain short-haul exemption provisions
Kimble Recycling & Disposal says its short-haul trash and recycling pickup drivers cannot complete their work day within the 12 hours required by the short-haul exemption and requests to allow its drivers to operate up to 14 hours in a day.

ELD maker KeepTruckin lands $150 million investment, company valued at $1B
Electronic log provider KeepTruckin, who’s prominent in the owner-operator market, announced April 23 it has received $149 million in Series D investment funding, with the company valued at $1 billion. The company says it will use the latest influx to fund new hires, invest in hardware, form new partnerships and to further its work in machine learning.

Trimble’s 3G hardware-recycling partnership
Trimble customers that upgrade to new devices in 2019 and 2020 as 3G networks sunset will be able to ship their uninstalled Trimble equipment to the Cobalt company free of charge, for safe and secure disposal of the hardware, recycling any components when possible.

Progressive discounting premiums for ELD data, adds claims process to mobile app
Progressive, whose trucking insurance product is focused on the small fleet and owner-operator market, has updated its claims process and to allow drivers to file claims for single-vehicle accidents within its mobile app. Also, truckers are saving on average nearly $1,400 a year in the company’s ELD data program.

FMCSA boss Martinez: Agency ‘very close’ to deciding on hours proposal
Martinez said the ELD mandate “really put a spotlight on something that hasn’t been looked at in over 15 years. The data generated by ELDs highlights areas of current HOS regulations where adjustments or improvements may be needed. Commerce has changed, technology has changed, and your business has changed in that time.”

Fireworks haulers get ELD waiver for Independence Day period
In its decision to grant the exemption, FMCSA says the 11-day exemption would not negatively impact safety. The agency also says it conducted “a comprehensive investigation of the safety performance history” of the 53 companies the exemption would cover.

Study: Under ELDs, crash rates flat but unsafe driving violations are up
A group of researchers this month issued a report on the effects of the electronic logging device mandate, and they reached two main conclusions: The use of ELDs has not reduced the rate of truck crashes, but it has increased the frequency of speeding violations, particularly among the small carrier segment.
