POLL: Should FMCSA ban off-duty random drug screens?

Trucker Nathan Weidert petitioned the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration for rulemaking to formally disallow off-duty notification of drivers that they've been selected for random drug testing. Weidert has personal experience with the practice, and felt the move would better align drug screens with guidance around alcohol testing in some ways.

"Alcohol testing can only be done on-duty," Weirdert wrote in his petition, or "when a CDL holder is about to perform, currently performing, or just completed performing a safety-sensitive function. Not when a CDL holder is attending a funeral, at a wedding, or working at another job."
