After five weeks of falling prices, the national average retail price of a gallon of diesel jumped in the latest week. The price soared 7.6 cents to $2.832, according to the Department of Energy.

All regions reported sharply higher prices, with the biggest increase of 8.9 cents in the Midwest, which has been the cheapest area for fuel. That distinction is now held by the Gulf Coast. New England remains the most expensive region, popping back over $3 at $3.011. California is close behind at $2.98 a gallon.
