The Arizona Department of Transportation plans to resume roadwork on Interstate 40 between the Winona and Walnut Canyon interchanges (milepost 205 to 209) on June 7.
The project to reconstruct portions of westbound I-40, which began last summer, is expected to be complete by August.
Beginning June 7, one lane in each direction of I-40 will be closed for approximately two weeks as workers apply the final layer of pavement. The westbound on- and off-ramps at the Cosnino interchange will be closed briefly at times for no more than a few hours. The eastbound Cosnino ramps and Cosnino Road above I-40 will remain open during the project. The Winona and Walnut Canyon interchanges also will remain open.
Following the two-week paving period, drivers should watch for intermittent single-lane closures in both directions of I-40 for approximately one month as workers install rumble strips and pavement markers. Single-lane closures and brief ramp closures will again go into effect for a few days in late-July when workers will apply the final striping.
Speeds in the project area will be reduced to 45 mph, and, during lane closures, the I-40 travel lanes will be restricted to widths of 16 feet or less. Work will take place weekdays during daylight hours, and some weekend work may be necessary.
