Tolling survey available

Updated Sep 15, 2010

Federal researchers are asking truckers take a survey to better gauge how truckers evaluate toll facilities.

The 2005 omnibus transportation funding act authorized the National Cooperative Freight Research Program, which is sponsoring the research with the National Cooperative Highway Research Program. Total funding is $300,000 for “Truck Tolling – Understanding Industry Tradeoffs When Using or Avoiding Toll Facilities.”

The trucking industry has been resistant to road pricing projects, where motorists pay for use, such as by tolling. Recent forums with representatives from road pricing and trucking illustrated the road pricing community needed better understanding of the trucking business.

Researchers hope to learn how toll facilities could be implemented to be of sufficient value to the industry.

The NCFRP is managed by the National Academy of Sciences’ Transportation Research Board, with program governance provided by an Oversight Committee, including a representative cross section of freight stakeholders.
