(Courtesy New York Department of Transportation)Six rest areas on Interstates in New York State are scheduled for temporary closure later this year to save money, the New York State Department of Transportation announced on its website.
The state DOT estimates it will save $490,000 in fiscal year 2010/2011 and $1 million in future fiscal years by closing these facilities, along with the June closing of the Schroon Lake rest area on southbound I-87.
Two locations will be closed on Nov. 1:
• Brewerton/Hastings on I-81 southbound between exits 31 and 32 in Oswego County, just north of Syracuse in Onondaga County. Restroom facilities will be closed, though, the DOT will still conduct commercial vehicle inspections at the site.
• Schodack on I-90 westbound between exits 11 and 12 in Schodack in Rensselaer County, near Albany. Also, the location will be used by the DOT for commercial vehicle inspections.
Rest areas to be closed by Dec. 1:
• Lewis on I-87 (the Adirondack Northway) southbound in Essex County between exits 31 and 32;
• Schroon Lake northbound on I-87 between exits 27 and 28 near the village of Schroon Lake;
• Worcester on I-88 eastbound between exits 18 and 18 near Oneonta. Site will continue to be used by the DOT for commercial vehicle inspections;
• And Wells Bridge on I-88 westbound between exits 11 and 12 near Oneonta. The site will continue to be used by the DOT for commercial vehicle inspections.
