Massachusetts will ban texting while driving starting Thursday, Sept. 30.

Violators would pay $100 fines. Repeat offenders would face escalating fines.

Massachusetts will join 29 other states to enforce texting bans. Next will be Wisconsin in
December, and Delaware is scheduled for January 2011.

On the federal level, a final rule that prohibits texting while driving for commercial haulers will take effect Oct. 27.
