Fuel prices have risen for seven straight weeks.In one of the sharpest increases in recent months, the national average retail price of diesel increased for a seventh straight week, soaring 7.4 cents to $3.407 during the week ended Jan. 17, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration.
Prices rose dramatically in all regions, led by an 11-cent increase in the New England area of the East Coast, where prices gained 8.4 cents overall. The Gulf Coast increased 8.2 cents, while the Midwest rose 6.9 cents. The nation’s most expensive diesel continues to be in California at $3.562, barely topping New England at $3.56 a gallon.
The national average price is 53.7 cents higher than the same week last year and is at the highest level since late October 2008, when the price was $3.488.
