Independent contractors in reefer and flatbed segments will have minimum pay set at $1.02 per mile starting June 1, said John Hancock, Prime Inc.’s recruiting director. The increase is available to all new and existing operators.
The Springfield, Mo.-based carrier pays its contractors 72 percent of revenue. “With our freight network, we’re confident of our ability to pay 72 percent and still go no lower than $1.02 per mile plus the fuel surcharge,” Hancock said. He explained that independent contractors have a fuel surcharge that holds the cost of fuel at $1.20 per gallon at 6 miles per gallon.
