I-20/59 southbound in Birmingham shut down due to overturned truck, collapsed road sign

UPDATE: 9/25/2015, 8 a.m. Central: Birmingham Police told Birmingham news station ABC 33/40 an SUV’s tire blew out, causing it to veer into an 18-wheeler’s lane. The driver of the 18-wheeler tried to swerve to avoid contact with the SUV, but overturned and hit the overhead road sign, causing it to collapse.

UPDATE: 9/24/2015, 8 p.m. Central: As of around 7 p.m. Central traffic was moving again in both directions around the scene of the accident — the picture above shows crews working to remove collapsed signage and other wreckage from the roadway.

A multi-vehicle crash in Birmingham has the southbound side of Interstate 20/59 shut down near Mile 120.

The Birmingham Police Department has confirmed via Twitter one fatality in the accident that involved three vehicles, an overturned 18-wheeler and a collapsed road sign. The truck was carrying large spools of paper, according to police.

According to Birmingham news station ABC 33/40, the crash occurred around 2:30 p.m.

Birmingham Police also said via Twitter they will be closing two lanes of the I20/59 northbound side to reroute southbound traffic.
