The Utah Highway Patrol says a truck driver who slammed into a restaurant Wednesday, Jan. 16 at about 6:30 a.m. was driving too fast for the snowy conditions.

The driver was heading eastbound on State Road 6 when it left the road and hit the Los Jilbertos restaurant in Wellington, southeast of Provo, causing part of the building to collapse. The restaurant was open and the restaurant owner’s wife was inside at the time of the accident, according to police.

The driver, the restaurant owner and the restaurant owner’s wife were all taken to the hospital with minor injuries. SR-6 was closed while the damage was assessed.

The accident caused electrical service and gas to be lost for part of Wellington, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. The local elementary school was closed Jan. 16 as a result.

The driver was not identified by police.
