FMCSA revokes certification of four ELDs from three companies

Four electronic logging devices from three providers are the latest to land of the "Revoked Devices" list from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

In announcing the revocations, FMCSA said the devices were removed from the Registered Devices list "due to the companies’ failure to meet the minimum requirements" in the federal regulations.

“Electronic logging devices play an important role in preventing unsafe driving practices,” said FMCSA Administrator Derek Barrs. “When devices don’t meet federal requirements, they put safety at risk, and that’s why we take action to remove them and keep our roads safer for everyone.”

The four revoked devices are:

  • P3TS from Top Tracking System
  • Field Warrior ELD (BYOD) from Forward Thinking Systems
  • Field Warrior ELD (Garmin) from Forward Thinking Systems
  • Dynamic ELD from Midwestern Logistics

David Isler, CEO of Forward Thinking Systems, said he was "very much taken by surprise on this," adding that the company believed it had "already fixed all issues identified by FMCSA and were surprised to see our name on the revoked list. We will get it sorted."

Attempts to reach the other companies for comment went unanswered as of press time.

Motor carriers and drivers have up to 60 days to replace the revoked devices with compliant ELDs. In the meantime, FMCSA encourages those using them to discontinue their use and revert to paper logs or logging software to record HOS data. Devices should be replaced with compliant ELDs by March 1.

Beginning March 1, motor carriers and drivers who continue to use the revoked devices listed above will be considered as operating without an ELD.

If any of the ELD providers correct all identified deficiencies for their device, FMCSA will place the ELD back on the list of registered devices and inform the industry of the update.

The revocations come amid a push by FMCSA to move away from self-certification by trucking service providers (from ELD companies to trainers and medical examiners) in its systems.
