Landes presents first CARE award
Landes Trucking, based in Jacksonville, Ill., has named Bob Oitker as the recipient of its first employee CARE (Customer Appreciation Recognition for Employees) award, given in recognition of outstanding customer service. Oitker received a $50 cash award and his name on the CARE plaque displayed in the Landes lobby. He was recommended for the award after catching a shipper loading error in two trailers.
Boyd driver reaches 2-million-mile mark
Boyd Bros. company driver Virgil Shell reached 2 million miles in November. The carrier held a celebration in his honor, where they presented him with a bonus check, a trophy and other prizes. Shell has been with the company for 16 years.
Roehl graduates seven from training center
Marshfield, Wis.-based Roehl Transport recently announced seven new graduates of the carrier’s Roehl Driver Training Center: Dana Anderson, Dollar Bay, Mich.; Wayne Skorch, Independence, Wis.; Scott Blyly, Niagara, Wis.; Dan Cappeart, Cornell, Mich.; Timothy Lewis, Horseheads, N.Y.; Steve Owston, Tremont City, Ohio; and Eugene Sly, Pelkie, Mich.
Con-way names Drivers of the Month
Con-way recently announced 18 Driver of the Month recognitions for July, Aug. and Sept. 2010. For July, Donald “Gene” Dollar was named Company Driver of the Month. Thomas and Joan Walter were named Company Team of the Month. Jimmy Echols was named Owner-Operator Driver of the Month, and Gary and Nora Bulen were named Owner-Operator Team of the Month.
In August, George Cook was Company Driver of the Month, and Jose Gallegos and Homero Pena were named Company Team of the Month. Alan St. Peters was named Owner-Operator of the Month, and Owner-Operator Team of the Month recognitions went to James Fisher and Kathryn Wheeler.
For September, Jose Herrera was named Company Driver of the Month, and Roy and Lana Greenwell were named Company Team of the Month. Owner-Operator Driver of the Month was Ricky Hilaire, and Cecilia and Robert Wallraven were named Owner-Operator Team of the Month.
Prime partners with children’s hunger charity
Prime Inc. has teamed up with Kids Against Hunger to package meals for starving children in el Salvador. Employees from Prime packaged more than 22,000 meals total. The Springfield, Mo.-based branch of the charity was founded by former Prime employee Karen Brigham. It relies solely on volunteer work to help organize and complete meal package and distribution worldwide.
Schneider increases tanker pay rate
The tanker division at Schneider National, Schneider National Bulk Carriers, is increasing owner-operator compensation by 5 cents a mile, making the new rate $1.05 a mile, plus fuel surcharge, for loaded and unloaded miles. The division also is adding experienced tanker owner-operators and will provide training to assist owner-operators considering a transition into the chemical-hauling segment.
Bennett driver celebrates 50 years of service
Owner-operator John W. Jackson, leased to McDonough, Ga.-based Bennett Motor Express, topped the 50-year mark in his career with the carrier in November. He joined the carrier (then George Bennett Truckline, a five-truck fleet) in 1960.
Averitt driver wins pickup truck for saving fuel
Averitt Express driver Marty Robbins was randomly selected from a pool of the company’s eligible drivers as the winner of a 2010 Ford F-150 as part of Averitt’s F-150 4×4 Fuel Duel challenge. The challenge assembled Averitt drivers into 142 teams and tasked them with improving their fuel efficiency compared to the same six-month period in 2009. Participating drivers conserved more than 130,000 gallons of fuel combined, the company says. Twenty other drivers were awarded with $500 fuel cards as part of the drawing.
Landes recognizes 10-year safe driver
Jacksonville, Ill.-based Landes Trucking honored driver Missy Hall at the company’s Christmas party for her string of 10 consecutive years of driving accident- and ticket-free. As part of the recognition, she received a $1,000 bonus and a gift certificate for a hotel stay and dinner at her restaurant of choice.
