Truckstop.com’s Market Demand Index has been above 12, the point of approximate equilibrium, during much of the last eight to 10 months, said Todd Amen, president and CEO of owner-operator financial services firm ATBS. The number is the ratio of loads to available trucks.

Speaking at last month’s Great American Trucking Show in Dallas, Amen showed how the index has climbed well above average this summer, peaking one week at the unheard-of level of 70. This huge demand for trucks amidst a booming economy has owner-operators on track to surpass their annual net income average by about $5,000 this year, Amen said.

In the video above, you can hear Amen, drawing upon the years of data from thousands of owner-operator clients, detail how the owner-operator market has developed and where it’s headed. For a quicker synopsis, read Overdrive Senior Editor James Jaillet’s coverage of Amen’s highlights.

His presentation was at an Overdrive’s Partners in Business seminar. The program is co-produced with ATBS and sponsored by TBS Factoring Service.
