A block of 63 lawmakers in the U.S. House has penned a letter to transportation appropriation leaders asking them to allow drivers hauling livestock and bees to remain exempt from compliance with the federal electronic logging device mandate through the 2020 fiscal year — Sept. 30, 2020.

Railroad companies seek hours reprieve for drivers responding to emergencies
The companies say the employees who would be covered by the exemption clear derailed or disabled trains or debris blocking tracks or railroad rights-of-way when they respond to unplanned events that affect interstate commerce, service, or the safety of railway operations.

The American Bakers Association and International Dairy Foods Association, Association of American Railroads and American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association, and North Shore Environmental Construction filed exemption requests with FMCSA from certain hours of service provisions when responding to emergencies.

Mobile crane operators get 30-minute break exemption extended
The Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association has held the exemption since October 2016 for carriers and drivers operating mobile cranes with a rated lifting capacity of more than 30 tons. The exemption applies to approximately 65,000 mobile crane operators.

Mobile shower, catering group seeks hours relief to better aid firefighters responding to disasters
The National Mobile Shower and Catering Association is requesting the regulations relief for its member companies’ drivers who are responding under a “Resource Order,” an order issued by a federal agency directing firefighters and supporting personnel to respond to forest fires and similar emergencies.

Hours of service violation rate cut in half under ELD mandate, FMCSA says
In the months leading up to the December 18, 2017, deadline for adoption, the percentage of inspections including an hours violation fell slightly to 1.2 percent. In the most recent two full months, since so-called hard enforcement of the ELD mandate began, that percentage has dropped to 0.69 percent (April) and 0.64 percent (May), according to FMCSA’s figures.
