Spot market van freight: As volume grows slowly, pricing lags

Freight trends this week: Nationally, van rates dropped a couple cents, but opportunity exists in local markets in N.Y., Pa., Md., Va. and Ind.; Charlotte-to-Buffalo lane still ripe for triangulation.

Nationally, with volume increases continuing for vans, the load-to-truck ratio had edged up since the last update (from 1.7) but fell week-over-week slightly to 1.8 loads per truck on DAT load boards with an influx of trucks. Freight availability declined most sharply in the Midwest and California. While states like South Dakota and Vermont show as dark red in this “Hot States” map, meaning that they had high load-to-truck ratios, both had relatively few loads available, so check outbound freight volume before taking a load into those states.

Rates sag in July in line with seasonal trends, cheaper diesel

Reefer freight led the segments in volume increases last week with a national 8.5 percent boost. At once, rates lost another 8 cents per mile as a national average, in part due to declining fuel prices but also due to sub-par harvests in dry California. Rates trended up last week in the Northeast and Midwest, where early crops are heading to market and grocery chains are stocking up on perishable items for the back-to-school season. Outbound rates rose in a handful of markets, including: Twin Falls, Idaho; Chicago; Green Bay, Wis.; and Elizabeth, N.J.

East Coast markets — where demand is warming for dry vans

Demand has fallen in many strong areas for van freight since the last weekly trends update, but a turnaround could be approaching. Strong freight volume on the East Coast held the national load-to-truck ratio steady.

This “hot states” map is based on the week of July 5-11. Los Angeles, Stockton and the Central California coast are busy, as is Houston and the Mexican border-crossing areas in Arizona and Texas. Capacity was also tight last week in Shreveport, La.; Little Rock, Ark.; and Decatur, Ala. The darker red areas indicate statewide load-to-truck ratios that are well above the week’s national average of 2.0 loads per truck, as recorded on DAT load boards.
