Hazmat-focused inspection blitz sidelines nearly 700 trucks
Commercial vehicle inspectors across North America inspected more than 9,200 trucks, placing 683 (approximately 7%) of them out-of-service during a week-long enforcement blitz focusing on hazardous materials and other dangerous goods.

Be prepared for next week’s nationwide Brake Safety Week inspection spree
If the results of June’s 72-hour International Roadcheck inspection blitz are any indication, Brake Safety Week may not be a pleasant experience for a number of drivers. Braking systems were the top OOS violation, accounting for more than a quarter of OOS violations with 4,578, or 28% of the total.

More than 12,000 trucks sidelined with OOS violations during June’s 72-hour Roadcheck blitz
CVSA says 12,019 trucks and 2,784 drivers were placed out of service, accounting for a 17.9% vehicle OOS rate and a 4.2% driver OOS rate during the blitz. In total, inspectors across the U.S. and Canada conducted 67,072 inspections from June 4-6.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s annual Brake Safety Week will focus on brake hoses and tubing. Inspectors will be checking to make sure the hoses and tubing are properly attached, undamaged, without leaks and appropriately flexible.

The AOBRD-to-ELD shift: Data/edits and visibility at roadside
With AOBRDs, edits made in the back office as a general rule don’t present to the roadside officer. Under the ELD specification, however, data transmittal at roadside includes those edits. It also includes detailed records of the truck’s GPS positions, engine on-off records, engine hours and the like.

In addition to speeding, law enforcement will be looking for other dangerous driving behaviors, including distracted driving, texting, failure to use a seatbelt, following too closely, improper lane change, reckless or aggressive driving, failure to obey traffic control devices, evidence of drunk or drugged driving and more.
