PRECIOUS CARGO
Michael Queen of Moreno Valley, Calif., takes great pride in his job and his 1996 Kenworth W900. Queen is a household goods/climate control driver. He says his most exciting load was transporting part of the Hubble Space Station for NASA.
Queen’s truck is outfitted with a 475-hp Caterpillar, 18-speed transmission and 3.55 rears. It also has a drop visor, 8-inch stacks, 110-inch custom sleeper and heart-shaped windows. Queen says his rig is his home away from home while on long hauls for VIP Transport, an agent of Allied Van Lines, out of Corona, Calif.
OLD GIRL
David Cornell caringly refers to his rig as Old Girl. A 500-hp Detroit Diesel powers his 1998 Peterbilt 378, which has a 13-speed transmission and 330,000 miles. When he is not on a long haul, Cornell says, he spends a lot of time washing and polishing his green and gold gal. After living in New York for 25 years, he and his family have chosen to relocate to North Carolina. However, Cornell will still be seeing a lot of New York because he arranged a dedicated run to New York and back each week hauling lumber and specialized machines.
