Dick Smith’s ‘Dirty Dozen’ KW still in action

| May 24, 2016

Since I wrote about Andy Harris’ short film from the Overdrive diesel drags in Englishtown, N.J., in the late 1970s the picture above turned up, which shows the V-12-powered 1971 Model A Kenworth of Dick Smith and family — that’s the rig as it is today, says Kiersten Demusz, fiancee to Smith’s grandson Rob Smith.

It also happens to be the truck that won the drags that day, driven by Dick, seen here with his wife in a screenshot from the film after the win.

Richard-Smith-at-diesel-dragsThe film “is somewhat of a treasure to my family and I,” Demusz says of Harris’ previously unseen work. “My fiance Rob Smith and I still take that same truck to the Englishtown Dragway every year. Our dream is to replicate the winning photo taken of his Pop and Nana on that day. We plan on using that truck as our ‘limo’ to our wedding next month.”

Here’s a big congrats to the happy couple, likewise to Dick on a long career. As Demusz also noted, Smith recently reached the end of a long career after “his health forced him to hang up the keys,” she writes. “We are all so thrilled about the video and want to thank you. It’s amazing to see actual footage.”

The local paper recently paid tribute to Smith’s career, noting that Smith’s R.W. Smith Trucking company, hauling a variety of aggregates from mining operations, is alive and well, and that he’ll remain a part of operations and decision-making in his non-driving role. Here’s a big tip of the hat to the family, shown below in a photo provided by Demusz. And if you missed it last week, catch at the bottom of this post Smith and his wife in the first several minutes of Andy Harris’ film about Overdrive‘s late 1970s diesel-drag-race event.
