Tesla details electric Semi specs

In a quiet update to its digital storefront, Tesla has provided some specifications for its Semi electric Class 8 truck. The company has said it will begin volume production of the rig later this year.

The Tesla Semi’s website details two specs -- Standard Range and Long Range.

The Standard Range model claims roughly 325 miles of operation at full charge and will have a curb weight under 20,000 pounds. The Long Range model boasts approximately 500 miles with a curb weight of 23,000 pounds.

Both models feature three independent motors on the rear axles delivering 800 kW (approx. 1,072 hp) of drive power. The trucks will consume about 1.7 kWh of energy per mile, even when loaded to a full 82,000-lb. gross combination weight, the company claimed.

Each model can also be charged up to 60% range in 30 minutes with fast charging, the company noted.

The Pilot truck stop chain last month announced a partnership with Tesla to install Semi chargers at select Pilot locations along certain corridors.
