Freightliner's Cascadia won't be made in Cascadia after this year.

Daimler Trucks North America will shift production away from Portland, Ore. — where the company has its headquarters — to the Carolinas, the company confirmed Thursday.

The move will take place by the end of the year, the company says.

"This action will help ensure the company is making the right investments in the right locations at the right time, strengthening its long-term competitiveness and industry leadership," a statement says. "The decision was not made lightly. The Portland team has played a critical role in DTNA's success for decades, and we are deeply grateful for the dedication, expertise and contributions of our employees. We are committed to supporting impacted team members throughout the transition, including severance benefits, transition assistance, opportunities to explore internal openings and access to additional support resources."

Portland will continue to be home to the company's headquarters and to the new engineering building. The factory move will affect the Freightliner and Western Star brands, and about 375 Daimler employees.
