Max Untitled 11Overdrive adopted the tagline “Voice of the American Trucker” decades ago and we’ve kept it ever since. Starting with the August issue, we’re giving it new depth, most noticeably with its opening Voices section. It includes not just traditional letters to the editor and face-to-face interviews, but your thoughts gathered from other sources: our Facebook page, comments on our website, our staff blogs, and truckers’ blogs and websites.

If you’re a regular reader, you’ll notice another expansion when you receive the August issue – it’s almost twice as big as those of recent years. The reason is that Overdrive now incorporates its sister publication, Truckers News, and Overdrive spinoff Custom Rigs. Consolidating enables us to reach more readers in the owner-driver market with more content. Truckers News readers, accustomed to finding the magazine in truck stops, will find Overdrive in most of those same truck stops.

Those who are regular visitors to our website already can see a big difference. It’s organized in ways that make it easier for you to find the trucking news, business and equipment stories you need as a professional driver. It also reflects the merger of Truckers News and Custom Rigs, including the lifestyle, entertainment and customization content that distinguished those magazines.

Not only does the new Overdrive have the opening Voices section to give plenty of air to the Voice of the American Trucker, but in preparation we literally listened to your voices by holding extended meetings with truckers at a local truck stop. We also surveyed hundreds of readers about their interests, as well as what they like and dislike in trucking magazines.

The result is that Overdrive will not change its staple of in-depth business, equipment, news and other stories that help owner-operators run their businesses. But it has changed with the addition of  these other elements:

• An enlarged version of the Diversions section from Truckers News. This will include an emphasis on health tips and coverage of trucking radio and television.

• A Knights of the Road feature to highlight in comic-book-like format the story of a trucker who quickly handled an emergency on the road.
