Gorsuch dissent in firing of ‘frozen trucker’ becomes confirmation hurdle
A 2016 dissent by Trump Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch, over a driver who sued his former carrier for wrongful termination, has become an obstacle to the judge’s path to his post on the Supreme Court. Some high-profile Democrats have cited the case as a reason to block Gorsuch’s confirmation.

The weak arguments for skimping on behind-the-wheel training
It’s sadly ironic that the agency charged with improving trucking safety would rely on lame excuses to shrug its shoulders at a simple, common-sense way to shore up safety.

As tax time looms, owner-operators shouldn’t overlook these deductions
Here are five of the most common deductions for owner-operators, says trucker tax expert Dennis Bridges, an Atlanta-area CPA who works with about 1,000 owner-operators. Savings for these add up to $3,000 for those in the 15 percent tax bracket — and more for those in the 25 percent bracket.

Interstate funding and rest areas: Public, meet Private
Let’s hope that however Trump, Chao and Congress choose to build out our infrastructure, it doesn’t financially punish the industry that already pays more than its share to support roads and bridges.

Improvements to the interstate highway system, including additional services at rest stops, will likely entail the public and private sectors working more closely together.

Deciphering Trump and the trade winds
Many U.S. truckers have feared the impending hordes of reckless Mexican drivers and the loss of U.S. driving jobs. So far, such concern appears overblown and misplaced. You could say the same for Trump’s rhetoric about isolating us from trading partners who have helped fuel America’s economic engines, including the trucking industry.
December 5, 2016
U.S. interests are integrated with Mexico and other countries in ways that aren’t as visibly newsworthy as a shuttered factory.

Trucker’s popular video blog includes four-legged co-star
Trucker Joshua Giesbrecht produces daily videos and posts them to YouTube. They’re mostly humorous monologs with himself and Diesel, his ride-along dog. Giesbrecht often mixes in real-time and fast-paced time-lapse highway shots backed by rock music.

Rearview: 17 years of FMCSA oversight
Long before FMCSA’s creation in 2001, Overdrive had been a watchdog of trucking regulation. In the 17 years of FMCSA’s existence, Overdrive has covered the agency’s tracks, from major regulations governing hours to warnings about e-cigarettes.
November 28, 2016
Long before FMCSA’s creation in 2001, Overdrive, since its founding in 1961, has been a watchdog of trucking regulation. One of its early targets was the antiquated Interstate Commerce Commission, noted in this ad from the Overdrive-sponsored Independent Truckers Association. The magazine’s rallying of independent truckers against the ICC helped lead to the beginning of the agency’s end in 1980.

Rearview: Organized independence
In 1962, a year after Overdrive began publication, editor Mike Parkhurst formed the Independent Truckers Association as a means to rally the magazine’s readership around common causes. ITA state chapters worked to assert truckers’ views into policy discussions across all levels of government.

Turning the national anthem into a scapegoat
Overdrive’s readers also feel strongly – as strongly as Colin Kaepernick feels about unjustified police shootings and other black oppression – that they’re abused by governmental officials. Instead of bullets and bludgeons, these officials wield an expanding arsenal of regulations that often add expense and misery to truckers’ everyday lives.
October 4, 2016
Janine Stange sings the national anthem at the Great American Trucking Show. She also performed this year at the Mid-America Trucking Show and last year at Wreaths Across America, a program that relies on fleets to help get wreaths placed at military cemeteries during the holidays. She will perform for the newly elected president Jan. 20 at the American Legion Salute to Heroes Inaugural Ball.

Rates, especially in the west, to spike due to major maritime carrier bankruptcy
Last week on the spot market, the load-to-truck ratio for outbound loads in the Los Angeles area shot up to about 7 load postings on DAT’s load board per one truck posting. The average is about two loads to one truck. The recent imbalance in loads to trucks puts upward pressure on rates.
September 27, 2016
The top portion of this graph from DAT shows the jump in load postings outbound from LA on DAT’s load board in recent weeks. The bottom bar charts show the jump in loads, too — from about 2,000 to as high as 4,000 a day in recent weeks — and a recent drop in available trucks.
