Owner-operator Bobby Earl bought this 2015 Peterbilt 389 in March of 2020, just as the COVID pandemic was starting. The rig was built to do oversize work, which it did for a year or so, Earl said, before the original owner sold it. The next owner pulled tankers with it for about two years, and Earl said he'd "see it every day and told the man, 'If you want to sell it, I want it.'"
Around the time he got the truck, he also lost a 30-year hauling contract. At that point, he had to make a decision -- keep driving the "beautiful" 2007 Peterbilt 379 he was in, which was not ELD-exempt, or jump into this 2015 Pete 389 glider, powered by a 12.7-liter Series 60 Detroit that is ELD-exempt. He decided to go with the 389, and "I haven't looked back," he said. He's been trucking for 43 years and is trying to make it to 50.
This rig's Series 60 is paired with an 18-speed transmission, 3.55 rears.
