Tanker organization wants FMCSA to allow pulsating brake lights on all tanker trailers
National Tank Truck Carriers wants the Groendyke exemption to apply to all tanker trailers, while also giving the option for a red pulsating light instead of just amber. NTTC’s request also asks that FMCSA allow the pulsating light to be installed in either the upper center or an upper dual outboard position.

DOT’s Chao refutes allegations in ethics probe as ‘simply false’
The Department of Transportation has responded to an ethics probe brought by the House’s Oversight Committee by calling allegations that Secretary Elaine Chao has abused her role as the DOT’s boss as untrue, chalking the accusations up to misunderstandings about her family and their relationship.

FMCSA grants HOS relief to truckers hauling food, water for firefighters responding to disasters
The drivers can extend their on-duty time from 14 hours to 16 hours, while still driving a maximum of 11 hours in a day. They can also use on-duty, not-driving time to satisfy the 30-minute break requirement under the terms of the exemption.

FMCSA officially adopts rules requiring background checks for hazmat CDL endorsement
The finalization of these interim final rules has no bearing on current drivers or carriers, as the rules have been in place since 2003 and 2005, respectively. The rules require drivers to undergo a TSA background check or hold a TWIC in order to receive a hazmat endorsement on their CDL.

Vision Systems North America says its Smart-Vision system provides the same functionality and view as traditional mirrors but with high-definition cameras and interior displays. The system consists of multiple digital cameras mounted high on the exterior of trucks.

New California laws require smog check for trucks, accelerate move away from diesel trucks
Two bills signed into law last week by California Gov. Gavin Newsom will further crack down on heavy-duty diesel trucks in the state. One law establishes “smog checks” for trucks to register and/or operate in the state, while the other is designed to accelerate the move away from diesel-powered trucks to zero emissions vehicles.

Comment period for proposed hours of service overhaul extended through Oct. 21
FMCSA announced in a Federal Register notice to be published Thursday, Sept. 19, it has extended the comment period from Oct. 7 to Oct. 21. The 14-day extension effectively gives the hours proposal a 60-day comment period from the time it was published Aug. 22.

Speeding, seat belt use among top violations for truckers during Operation Safe Driver Week
CVSA selected speeding as the emphasis of the blitz for officers, which resulted in 1,454 tickets and 2,126 warnings issued to truck drivers for speeding, compared to 16,102 citations and 21,001 warnings to passenger car drivers for the offense.
