EPA intends to review truck emissions regs to uniform rules, add tighter NOx standards
The U.S. EPA on Tuesday announced plans to explore overhauling emissions regulations for heavy-duty trucks and engines, aiming for greater simplicity of emissions regulations and national uniformity of such regs, said EPA Acting Administrator, Andrew Wheeler.

Updated policy guidance from the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance issued in late September establishes that inspectors should not disrupt drivers’ off-duty or sleeper berth time, when they’re legally parked, for a random inspection.

Two large fleets fined by EPA for California emissions violations
According to EPA, Schneider and Old Dominion “failed to install particulate filters on some of their heavy-duty diesel trucks and failed to verify that trucks they hired for use in California complied with the state rule.” The companies will pay a combined $225,000 in penalties and $575,000 for air filtration upgrades at schools.

Dem lawmakers ask DOT to reject ATA’s petition for reprieve from Calif. break laws
ATA in early October petitioned the DOT to intervene into the ongoing conflict over the state’s stringent laws, which a federal court in 2014 ruled apply to trucking companies and their drivers. A group of 19 Democrats in the House and Senate, however, asked the DOT to reject the petition, saying it requires a Congressional statute.

Two of five top recipients of trucking campaign dollars drop re-election bids
The industry in sum contributed $5.79 million to election campaigns in the 2018 cycle, according to CRP data, with $4.22 million (83 percent) going to Republican candidates and political action committees and $835,851 going to Democrats (16 percent).

According to CVSA, inspectors across the U.S. and Canada inspected 35,080 commercial vehicles during the blitz and placed 4,955 (14.1 percent) out of service for brakes violations during September’s Brake Safety Week.
