FMCSA proposes altering personal conveyance guidelines as ELD mandate arrives
The key change to the personal conveyance guidance is the removal of the requirement that trucks be unladen to be used for personal conveyance. FMCSA says the change is mostly meant to allow straight truck drivers the opportunity to use their truck, even if it is laden with work- or load-related materials or tools, for personal use.

ELD compliance extension for ag/livestock haulers formally issued by FMCSA
FMCSA has officially issued a waiver giving drivers who haul livestock and ag loads until March 18 to switch from paper logs to ELDs. Itâs also soon accepting comments on changes to hours of service exemptions offered to ag haulers.

FMCSA, DOT present oral arguments over sleep apnea guidelines, medical form changes
Attorneys for OOIDA argued last month in court that the U.S. DOT illegally altered sleep apnea screening guidelines for truck drivers by slipping an appendix into larger rule after the public comment period had ended. DOT refutes these claims.

Short-term rental trucks land a short-term ELD exemption
TRALA requested in March a more permanent exemption from ELD use for short-term rental trucks. In October, FMCSA granted an ongoing exemption for rental trucks used for eight days or fewer, rather than 30 days. Rentals fewer than 30 days now get until mid-March to comply with the mandate.

Truckers rack up nearly 39,000 warnings, citations during Operation Safe Driver Week
Truckers were given 30,714 warnings and 8,164 citations during the enforcement blitz, 84.2 percent of which were for state and local moving violations. Speeding accounted for 7.4 percent of violations.

Kentucky-licensed trucker shut down following accident caused by drug overdose
According to FMCSA, Kinmon was driving west on I-74 in Ohio on Aug. 18 when his truck slowed down to a stop and began rolling backwards. The truck rolled into adjacent travel lanes, jackknifed and hit a guardrail before coming to a stop with the trailer blocking the westbound lanes.

Senators push for further delay of ELD compliance for livestock haulers
A bi-partisan group of 20 U.S. Senators has filed a letter with Senate leaders Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) and Chuck Schumer (D-New York) expressing their support for a Congressional measure to give livestock haulers and insect haulers at least an extra 10 months to comply with the federal governmentâs electronic logging device mandate.
