FMCSA holding autonomous trucks meeting next week
During the meeting, FMCSA is looking for information relating to the design, development, testing and deployment of “highly autonomous” vehicles, specifically dealing with CDLs, qualification of drivers, the use of electronic devices, hours-of-service for drivers and inspection, repair and maintenance of the trucks.

Texas to require intrastate drivers to use ELDs by 2019, other states to follow
Texas has updated its hours of service code to require intrastate truckers to use electronic logging devices to record duty status. Truck operators in the state must begin using the devices by Dec. 19, 2019. Though Texas appears to be the first state to issue an ELD requirement for intrastate truckers, other states will likely soon follow.

ATRI: Cost of DOT physicals up since medical examiner registry instituted
ATRI, which conducted the survey with the Mayo Clinic in September and October, found that drivers don’t believe the quality of the exams has increased despite the increased costs. Many drivers (nearly 40 percent) responding to the survey said their costs for a medical exam range between $75 and $124.

OOIDA takes ELD case to the Supreme Court
OOIDA, whose legal team is representing independent truckers Richard Pingel and Mark Elrod in the case, has asked the nation’s high court to reevaluate a lower court ruling issued in October that upheld the U.S. DOT’s rule to require truckers to use logging devices to track hours of service.
