Cargo thefts reported at Miami airport

Approximately $1.4 million in cargo was stolen from Miami International Airport on Feb. 10, FreightWatch International reported.

The cargo was loaded into a tractor-trailer and left in a warehouse parking lot unattended while the driver entered the building to complete his paperwork, FreightWatch said.

This is the fourth similar incident at the Miami airport in a month, all targeting consumer electronics cargo, FreightWatch said. The total estimated value of all the thefts is $3 million, according to Dan Burges, FreightWatch senior director of intelligence.

Since Miami-Dade Police Department has decided to scale back its Cargo Theft Task Force for budgetary reasons, an increase in organized cargo theft activity is probable, FreightWatch said.
