Vigillo, creators of the CSA Driver Scorecard product used by many carriers to rate drivers in CSA safety performance categories as well as the free Roadside Resumé for drivers, has released its Daylight Driver Index, a driver scoring system that describes an individual driver’s inspection and crash record using CSA data.
The new product differs from the old in that it assigns a single number (0-100) to a driver in its system. Given that drivers’ rankings in the BASICs in FMCSA’s internal Driver Safety Measurement System are not publicly available, driver information in the system will be dependent on carrier reporting of driver data into Vigillo’s system.
Steven Bryan, Vigillo founder and CEO, likens the DDI to a credit score in that it purports to be “a single number that describes a person’s creditworthiness.”
Vigillo says it has data on almost 750,000 drivers in its database.
“Because carrier CSA scores are essentially the rolled-up aggregation of individual drivers’ roadside performance,” Bryan adds, “having a single number to easily and quickly view will be of great assistance to carriers that want to improve and maintain long-term positive CSA scores.”
The American Trucking Associations recently endorsed the new DDI. Citing FMCSA’s refusal to make Driver Safety Measurement System scores publicly available, said ATA’s Dave Osiecki, senior vice president of policy and regulatory affairs, “we believe Vigillo’s DDI presents a needed alternative for obtaining an easy way to understand driver safety performance metric.”
At a meeting of the FMCSA’s Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee Aug. 27, 2012, ATA representative Rob Abbott recommended the newly formed CSA Subcommittee look at whether making Driver SMS scores and data public would positively impact safety.
FMCSA reps confirmed their intention of making the system public but cited Privacy Act barriers and other complications as standing in the way.
Vigillo’s DDI also:
- Is based on published FMCSA methodologies
- Identifies drivers for priority review based on similar factors as carriers ranked for review and roadside inspection priority (ISS)
- Uses appropriately normalized data for comparison of individual drivers
- Elevates “Red Flag” driver violations to a high visibility item
- Highlights drivers with “Shadow Violations,” where a driver has insufficient data in a BASIC but has violations
- Is included at no additional cost in carrier CSA Scorecard Subscriptions
