Updated Dec 13, 2015

Police in Florida are still trying to figure out how and why a truck driver fell or jumped from his still moving rig only to be struck and killed by the truck.

The accident occurred the morning of Monday, Dec. 7 at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Lowndes Avenue in Ormond Beach, Fla., according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The identity of the truck driver, whose home is listed as Miami Gardens, Fla., has yet to be released pending notification of his family. The report only identified the truck as a 2004 model.

Police said the 46-year-old male truck driver exited the vehicle, which was empty, and was struck by it. The driverless truck, which was northbound on U.S. 1, then collided with a southbound 2009 Malibu, the driver of which was injured and taken to the hospital. A passenger in the car was also injured and hospitalized, according to police.

The crash occurred at about 6:30 Monday morning and remains under investigation.
