Overdrive sister publication CCJ Editor Jason Cannon recently got a close look at Peterbilt's second generation battery-electric tractor model, the 579EV.
The model was first available in 2020, and with the recent update gets "a lot more range, a brand-new electric powertrain, and charging capabilities that slash the amount of time it takes to recharge the batteries," Cannon notes in the video above, also featuring Peterbilt Electric Vehicle Marketing Manager Patrick Wallace for a full walkaround detailing the truck's features.
The new 579EV builds on the aerodynamic diesel 579 platform, but it's aimed specifically at short-haul and drayage segments. Three battery-capacity options deliver a maximum range of 200 miles. That's up from 150 miles in the first generation. Max range is possible with the four-battery configuration with Lithium-Iron-Phosphate chemistry, notes Wallace. "It's the perfect battery choice for commercial applications."
