UPDATED as of August 26, 2020:

If you have a question about the hours of service rule going into effect on September 29, join us at Overdrive‘s Facebook page on Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 8 p.m. Eastern to get answers directly from Joe DeLorenzo of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. DeLorenzo, director of enforcement and compliance for FMCSA and also acting associate administrator, has been a regular on the Great American Trucking Show stages in years past. For this virtual seminar he’ll detail some of the intricacies of the hours changes in these four major areas:

The 30-minute break: New rules allow the requirement to be satisfied with an on-duty not-driving or off-duty status. The requirement to take it, furthermore, will be after eight hours of driving rather than on-duty time.

The split-sleeper berth provision: In addition to an 8/2-hour split, drivers can use a 7/3-hour split. The shorter period newly does not count against the 14-hour on-duty window limitation, opening up possibilities to use the shorter periods for mid-duty-period naps without losing duty time.

The adverse conditions exception: In addition to current rules, which give operators the ability to utilize two extra hours when adverse conditions delay an otherwise doable run, two extra on-duty hours can also be utilized if needed.

Short-haul logbook exception: New rules expand the air mile radius to 150 air miles and boost maximum daily on-duty hours to 14.

If you have a question for DeLorenzo you’d like to deliver in advance, write to Dills via this email link.

The hours of service session anchors a week’s worth of late afternoon/evening programming continuing the various Overdrive programs that would have otherwise featured prominently at the Great American Trucking Show in Dallas, canceled in attempts to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus.
