“One man’s misfortune is another man’s opportunity.” Sounds like a lyric from a Paul Marhoefer song to me, and it’s a perhaps apt, if unfortunate (for Marhoefer), description of circumstances that brought the man of many talents to Nashville on Monday only to miss out an opportunity to perform for a live audience on the iconic WSM radio with late-night host Marcia Campbell this past Monday. The session cancelled for particular reasons this terrible flu season (here’s wish Campbell well), but Marhoefer was here in Nashville with Muscle Shoals Music’s Donnie and Jan Gullet (picture above, left, with Marhoefer and his wife, Denise) at the Fiddler’s Inn near the Opry.

I wouldn’t turn down the opportunity to hear the three masters play for myself, but of course.

In this edition of Overdrive Radio, you’ll hear several Marhoefer tunes. The Gullets regular readers may recall backed him on and produced his “Old Black Epiphone” record, also a few tracks off his latest disc of music to truck by with Laughing Hyena records, out now and available at many of the truck stops around the nation. Marhoefer also chatted with me a little about his approach in a series of Overdrive Extra blog posts he’s building around the men and women of the road, from the professional drivers at the center to those on the periphery. His first post in the series you may well have caught recently, detailing the independent heavy specialized hauling business of owner-operator Randy Cunha.
