Mount Horeb, Wisconsin-based N. Scott “Scooter” White, an owner-operator leased to Landstar, always dreamed of becoming a truck driver and owning his own truck and trailer. His grandfather was a trucker for 50 years and was a Teamster.
White, on his 15th birthday on Dec. 8, 1985, ran away from home for the second time and hitchhiked to Jessup, Maryland, which at the time was home to one of the largest truck stops on the East Coast, he said.
Three days later, he was picked up by a Bekins Van Lines driver, who taught White everything about the moving industry, including packing, loading, customer service and, eventually, how to drive.
White said this photo from Key West, Florida, is from December 1991, right after he turned 21. That was the beginning of his first "legal/solo trip over the road to California," he said.
Late in 2024, White began his 39th year in the trucking industry. He spent most of his career with Bekins, then with Wheaton | Bekins after Wheaton bought the van line in 2010.
In 2020, after 34 years in the moving industry, White got out of that business and went to work for Landstar, hauling specialized freight, including high-end furniture, government freight, hazmat, concert equipment and more.

The Kenworth K100 pictured here is the first truck White bought as an owner-operator. He noted he's owned many trucks through the years, but the 2007 Freightliner pictured up top, "Lord willing will be my last truck."
He hauls in a 2007 Freightliner Classic XL, pictured up top, which sits on a 304-inch wheelbase and is powered by a 14-liter Series 60 Detroit with a 13-speed and 3.58 rears. It boasts a 120-inch ARI rear-door sleeper. His trailer is a 2010 Great Dane with a 4,400-pound lift gate and three large belly boxes for equipment.
“I absolutely love the trucking industry, and I don’t plan on ever retiring,” he said.
He credits much of his success to his wife, Amy, who’s also his business partner.
